Owner John Shulan said the Give Back to the Community Raffle will see the 90-year-old jewelry and gift store give away $30,000 in merchandise in weekly drawings starting May 9. The final drawing, Dec. 15, will see one lucky ticket holder win a $17,000 18-karat white gold diamond bracelet. To enter the drawing, participants contribute $10 per ticket. They can choose which of four organizations receive the funds: the American Heart Association, Akron Children’s Hospital, One of a Kind Pet Rescue or the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Cancer Foundation. Participants can enter as many times as they like, Shulan said. “My goal is to write four giant checks for this,” Shulan said. “It would be great to raise some money in a fun way for four great causes.” Shulan said the raffle is his way of thanking Akron area shoppers for their support of the family business over the past 90 years. Shulan’s opened for business in 1921 in Downtown Akron by Shulan’s grandfather, Alex Shulan. “The store was on the corner of Main and Mill,” Shulan said. “Dad grew up in the business and got paid in ice cream sundaes from the Garden Grill.” In 1954, Shulan’s father, Jay Shulan, decided to open his own store in the Eastgate Shopping Center in East Akron. It was a historic event, as Shulan’s was the first jewelry store in the state to open in a shopping plaza rather than a downtown business district, Shulan said. In 1960, Jay Shulan opened a store in the new Fairlawn Plaza, becoming just the second retailer to set up shop in the new retail center (now known as Fairlawn Towne Center). “The store was one-third the size it is today,” Shulan said. “There used to be a soybean field across the street. This was the boonies.” Meanwhile, the original Shulan’s in Downtown Akron closed and Alex Shulan moved into the Eastgate location, Shulan said. For Bath resident Shulan, the business has been part of his life since an early age. “My first job at 6 was folding boxes,” he said. Shulan went away to college and then worked at another family jewelry business in Iowa but came back to the Akron area 22 years ago. “My first love has always been jewelry and giftware,” he said. He added that over the years, the store has added more tabletop items — such as china, crystal and serving pieces — to its inventory. “We’re easily in the top 10 in the country for selection,” Shulan said. “We are among the top retailers for several brands.” Shulan said he encourages customers to help the business celebrate by participating in the raffle. No purchase is necessary. The first drawing on May 9 will feature a ladies Baume & Mercier watch valued at $1,690 as the prize. Once participants buy a raffle ticket, they will be included in each weekly drawing, Shulan added. Raffle tickets may be purchased with cash or check, Shulan said. The store is located at 2701 W. Market St. and open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 330-836-8477. Foundation adds light to holiday By Jewell Cardwell ~ Beacon Journal staff writer Published on Wednesday, Dec 15, 2010 Beautiful bouquets to the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Cancer Foundation, whose board members and volunteers will be delivering 30 holiday meals in time for Christmas, as they did for Thanksgiving, to individuals and families battling cancer. Marisa Hoffmann, associate director of this godsend of a foundation, explained the selection process: ''We select the families from those we may have previously helped this past year and we also partner with local oncology social workers, Stewart's Caring Place, American Cancer Society, Falls Cancer Club, etc. ''The meals next week will have a large ham donated by Jacob and Clara Faber, an apple crumb pie from Gardner Pie Co., snacks from Hickory Harvest Foods, bread from the Great Harvest Bread Company, corn and cookies from Ivan's Deli, and holiday side dishes (stuffing, sweet potatoes and green bean casserole) from Sandridge Foods Corp. We also provide regular potatoes, sparkling grape juice, a gallon of milk and butter for the bread. The Hilton Akron/Fairlawn assists with some of those items. Finally, we also provide candy canes and a small holiday gift for each family to open in December.'' |

Cancer organizations help each other ~ 3/12/2009 - West Side Leader Reprinted with permission by Leader PublicationsBy Staff Writer FAIRLAWN — Since the inception of the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Cancer Foundation in April 2006, Stewart’s Caring Place has been a partner, according to foundation officials, with each organization referring individuals and families affected by cancer to the other.
While Stewart’s Caring Place provides an environment of healing and support for individuals and families touched by cancer, the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Cancer Foundation provides financial aid by easing some of the day-to-day burdens that confront Summit County area cancer patients and their families. Shown at right, on Feb. 11 Ruthie George and Marisa Lamkin, pictured second and third from left, respectively, of the foundation, delivered $1,000 in gift cards of various denominations to Evelyn DiBello, at far left, and Ellen Cleary, at far right, at Stewart’s Caring Place. They, in turn, distributed the gift cards to disadvantaged cancer patients and their families for use of prescriptions, clothing and food, according to foundation officials. __________________________________________________________________ ‘Kickin’ It’ raises funds for foundation ~ 12/18/2008 - West Side Leader Reprinted with permission by Leader PublicationsBy Staff Writer WEST AKRON — The Caribbean was transported to the Akron area Oct. 4 for the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Cancer Foundation’s THE EVENT: “Kickin’ It in the Caribbean.” According to event officials, about 700 people attended the fund-raiser, which took place at the residence of Jane and Steve Comunale. Proceeds, which were still being counted at presstime, will benefit the foundation’s outreach program for local cancer patients and their families. The co-chairs for the event were Ruthie George and Jane Comunale. Guests enjoyed the island music and dancing, corn-hole on the beach and tropical treats.Shown at right, from left, are George Cantley, Julie Cantley (daughter of George and Kim Cantley), Jim Myers and Kim Cantley. _____________________________________________________________________ Spin-For-Life event organized to help cancer patients, families ~ 2/7/2008 - West Side Leader Reprinted with permission by Leader Publications By Maria LindsayFAIRLAWN — Supporters will be spinning their wheels, literally, to help families affected by cancer at the Spin-For-Life event to take place March 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the ballroom at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, 3180 W. Market St. During the inaugural fund-raiser, teams of riders will take a seat on stationary bikes to burn calories and raise funds for the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Foundation, a newly created organization dedicated to easing the financial burdens of local cancer victims and their families as they cope with medical bills, absence from work and other issues. “The money raised at the event will support the work of the foundation, which aims to help cancer patients and their families with ancillary needs such as making a mortgage payment and other financial burdens associated with cancer,” said Rennick Andreoli, president of the Hilton and RDA Hotel Management Co., and a founding board member of the Stephen A. Comunale Foundation. “This money is not used to fund research, but instead goes directly to the families.” The foundation will rely on partnerships with organizations and resource providers to suggest individuals in need of assistance. The aid aims to enhance the quality of life of the individual and their families affected by cancer, according to Andreoli. Spin-For-Life has been organized to honor the life of Stephen A. Comunale Jr., a local man who died of stomach cancer at age 28 in February 2006. “We hope to keep Stephen’s name alive and help families pay day-to-day bills with an annual event,” said Kim Hurray, Spin-For-Life coordinator. Stephen is one of two sons of the owner of S.A. Comunale Inc., a fire protection and mechanical services company with branches in Akron and other communities in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The company became a subsidiary of EMCOR Group Inc. in October 2006. The foundation’s goal is to raise $100,000 through sponsorships and donations for Spin-For-Life. Individuals or teams are invited to participate in “spinning” by riding a stationary bicycle for one to six hours. Spinning aims to achieve maximum energy output and is designed for people of all ages and levels of fitness. During the exercise, an instructor takes participants through various levels of difficulty while riders listen to music and visualize a ride through the foothills of a mountain or along the coast of an ocean. The fund-raising spinning event will be led by certified spinning instructor Jackie Banayan, of Jacob Superior Kinetics, who is a certified personal trainer with a master’s degree in cardiac rehabilitation and exercise physiology from The University of Akron. Two free training sessions will be offered to the event’s participants at Jacob Superior Kinetics, 300 N. Cleveland-Massillon Road. For details, contact Hurray at (330) 867-5024, ext. 643.Registration fees are $200 for each adult rider and $100 for student riders per hour. Participants may form their own teams and register at a cost of $1,200 for the six hours of spinning, or register as individuals, who will then be placed on a team. Registration fees may be paid by collecting pledges, corporate sponsorships or by the participating rider. Each rider will receive a Nike Dri-Fit jersey, a goodie bag and two tickets to the “Open Your Heart” cocktail reception scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Beau’s Grill, 3180 W. Market St. Additional tickets for the reception are available for $25 each.
